Internet Safety Month

Help your family become digital defense champions

Here at Alpine Bank, we take the security of your hard-earned money seriously. This June, Internet Safety Month is the perfect opportunity to empower your family to become digital defense champions when it comes to protecting your finances online.

We’ve created a week-by-week guide to help you navigate internet safety throughout the month, focusing on practical tips for the whole family.

Week 1: Password Power Hour!

Gather everyone around the computer and discuss the importance of strong passwords. Use a password manager to create unique, complex passwords for all your online accounts. Help everyone in the family update passwords on all online accounts, including social media, bank accounts, and shopping sites.

Week 2: Guarding Your Devices

Begin this week by changing the default password on your home Wi-Fi router and enabling encryption (WPA2 or WPA3) to secure your network. Discuss responsible app downloads with your family, emphasizing the importance of only installing apps from trusted sources (app stores). Finally, install the latest security updates and anti-virus software on all family devices (computers, phones, tablets).

Week 3: Social Media Savvy

It’s time to discuss privacy. Review your family’s privacy settings on social media platforms together. Encourage teens to be mindful of what they share publicly online. Discuss the risks of oversharing personal information (addresses, birthdays) online, both on social media and through messaging apps. Finish off by talking about online etiquette and responsible behavior, including avoiding cyberbullying and spreading misinformation.

Week 4: Financial Fitness for the Digital Age

Talk to your family about how to access your bank’s online features securely. Explain the importance of using a secure connection and never sharing login credentials. Go over common financial scams and empower everyone to be vigilant and report suspicious activity. Enable multi-factor authentication (MFA) on all your bank accounts and other sensitive online accounts. This adds an extra layer of security.

Internet Safety Month is a great springboard to start ongoing conversations about online safety with your family. By working together, you can build a strong digital defense and ensure everyone feels confident navigating the online world.
