Via Mobility Services provides a lifeline and bridge to the community for paratransit clients
Chris Maughan, the market president for Alpine Bank Boulder, is a 20-year employee with the bank. He’s also a familiar face in the community, volunteering with such diverse nonprofits the Safehouse Progressive Alliance for Nonviolence, Growing Gardens, the Boulder Symphony and most recently, Via Mobility Services.
The ability to move is a universal human need. Via believes all people have a right to easily access mobility options, and its mission is to promote independence and self-sufficiency for people with limited mobility by providing caring, customer-focused transportation options.
Specifically, Via is a leader in paratransit across several counties in the Denver-Boulder region and operates specialty municipal transit systems. By definition, paratransit is a shared ride public service intended to serve as a “safety net” for individuals who, because of their disabilities, are unable to use a fixed route bus for some or all their travel.
As a board director with Via Mobility Services for six months now, Chris is passionate about the essential role the organization plays in the Denver-Boulder region. Not so long ago, in 2021, the massive Marshall Fire in Boulder County illustrated the necessity for seamless reliability in the local and regional paratransit transportation system. Via was there to evacuate about 100 individuals with disabilities.
“So many lost everything in that tragedy. It required a large emergency response in which Via served alongside many of our first responders in order to evacuate people from care facilities and homes in the fire-impacted areas,” says Chris. “It’s an inspiring story of the dedication of the team, in the face of incredible danger, to our paratransit clients.”
Chris also admires Via’s commitment to sustainability. “They’re a nationwide leader in fleet conversion to electrified vehicles and they operate their own microgrid and charging infrastructure,” he says. Its Boulder headquarters were built with green technology in 2010, and the vehicle fleet utilizes electric, hybrid electric, compressed natural gas, clean diesel and conventional gasoline as fuel sources.
Chris and his fellow Via team members envision a future where all people, regardless of age, health, disability, income or ethnicity, have easy access to the mobility options they need for independence and quality of life.
