Planning for a dry Colorado summer

As Colorado heads into the summer months, forecasts are pointing to continued dry conditions across much of the state. While this kind of outlook often spurs conversations about water use and outdoor plans, it’s also worth thinking about how weather can impact business finances, especially for small businesses.

Industries that rely heavily on consistent weather or water availability, such as agriculture, landscaping, food service and hospitality, may feel pressure from higher operating costs or tighter insurance requirements. In some areas, wildfire risk can also affect insurance pricing or coverage options, making it more important than ever to stay ahead of renewals and policy changes.

The good news is that preparation doesn’t have to be overwhelming. A few practical steps can strengthen financial resilience without disrupting day-to-day operations:

  • Review insurance coverage early: Checking policies well before renewal gives you time to explore options and avoid surprises.
  • Create a basic continuity plan: Knowing how your business would operate during a weather disruption brings clarity and confidence.
  • Invest in practical upgrades: Water-efficient systems, backup power or fire-resistant improvements can lower ongoing costs while adding protection.
  • Diversify revenue where possible: Reducing reliance on weather-sensitive services can help smooth income during unpredictable seasons.

Dry conditions are a reality of doing business in Colorado, but thoughtful planning can turn uncertainty into opportunity. Businesses that take small, proactive steps today are better positioned to protect their bottom line and stay flexible no matter what the summer brings.
