Energy-efficient water heaters save not only energy, they save money too. There are different types water heaters, ranging from tankless/on-demand water heaters to conventional ones that encompass an insulated storage tank. Even solar-powered models are available. Here are four quick tips for saving energy with your home’s water heater:

  1. Evaluate the best fuel type and water heater category for you
  2. Ensure the water heater is appropriately sized to handle daily tasks (think showers, dishes, and laundry)
  3. Make certain the water heater is installed correctly
  4. Once installed, make sure to follow the manufacturer’s suggested maintenance schedule

While your heating or cooling bill is likely the top energy expense in your home, water heating tends to be the second largest home energy cost.
