Since 1995, Habitat Vail Valley has worked to help local families achieve strength, stability and self reliance through shelter. More than 100 families have built strong foundations for brighter futures.
In 2022, Alpine Bank, a longtime supporter of Habitat, helped the Habitat ReStore in Gypsum move into an expanded showroom, helping increase sales by 30 percent and thereby allowing for more homes to be built. Between 2022 and 2024, Habitat Vail Valley is set to double its impact by starting 46 homes over the three years. In 2023 alone, they will build 24 homes — triple the average yearly production, said Executive Director John Welaj.
Habitat is the only organization in Eagle County that builds affordable homes with families earning 35-80 percent AMI (area median income) for a family of four. Every adult homeowner gives 250 sweat equity hours.
Meeting the families who volunteer and help build their homes is very rewarding.
“We are proud to partner with hardworking locals who want to build their lives here, enhancing our community. When teachers, police officers, resort workers can’t afford to create a life here, everyone loses,” he said. “We’re proud of our partnerships that help us build community.”
