For families in western Colorado who are experiencing the decline of a loved one, nonprofit HopeWest has an important message: “Know us before you need us.”
Serving western Colorado in Mesa, Delta, Montrose, Ouray, and Rio Blanco counties since 1993, HopeWest has been profoundly changing the experience of aging, illness and grief through creativity, volunteerism and philanthropy. Offering in-home care, palliative care, hospice care and grief support for children, teens and adults, the HopeWest team embodies service, compassion, kindness and understanding.
“We’re a patient-centric organization. Everything that we do is for our patients and their families,” explains Kelly Thompson, program director for the Montrose branch of HopeWest. “I’m never sure what impact I will have during the day, but when I wake up each morning, I wonder, ‘How am I going to change someone’s life today for the better?’”
Everything the HopeWest team does is collaborative and driven by their patients’ wishes. “This is something that many people don’t understand about hospice care. We don’t tell people what to do. We ask our patients, ‘What do YOU want?’ And we make it happen,” says Kelly. “We listen and follow a patient’s wishes for their final journey.”
In 2023, the organization’s 30th anniversary, HopeWest now serves more than 10,000 square miles with five offices, a
state-of-the-art Hospice Care Center and the Bacon Center for Living Your Best. With a staff of 425 and more than 1,000 volunteers, they provide care to more than 2,250 patients and participants, as well as more than 1,500 individuals coping with grief, annually.
“We are so much more than a hospice or health care organization,” says Kelly. “We have grown and expanded services to become a nationally respected model for creative and effective elder, palliative and hospice care that’s delivered in private homes, skilled nursing facilities, assisted-living facilities and our own hospice care center.”
Kelly is appreciative of Alpine Bank and its mission. “It’s very well aligned with ours. We’re both seeking to make this a better world and leave it in a better condition for future generations,” he says.
