For nearly a decade, La Plata County’s nonprofit Know Your Dough has provided financial literacy education to more than 8,000 kids, teens and adults through in-person classes led by volunteer educators, and teacher-led online programs. The classes are free to participants since they’re fully funded by grants, local businesses and individuals.
Know Your Dough’s mission to create strong financial futures is accomplished by delivering high-quality, life-changing personal financial knowledge, promoting short- and long-term financial literacy and empowering financial security and independence.
What makes Know Your Dough executive director Kathy Wilson jump out of bed every day?
“We’re changing lives,” she says. “It’s so gratifying when a student is engaged in our class in a way that they haven’t been all year. Or, when a young adult approaches me and shares how our class has affected their life.”
Kathy says the programs are informative, interactive and fun, and that students typically leave with 35 to 55 percent more knowledge than when they started.
