Pedaling to leave cancer behind
Imagine hearing, “You have cancer”. Those three words can devastate. A cancer diagnosis requires optimism and inner strength, along with the external comforting support of friends, family and community. It also takes comprehensive medical care. That’s why the Center for Integrative Care at Boulder Community Hospital exists, to help those facing cancer by providing a supportive and healing environment alongside surgery, radiation, chemotherapy and other treatment modalities.
A fundraiser in support of the Center for Integrative Care, the B Strong Ride, began in 2011. Since then, over 8,500 B Strong Riders have raised over $4 million to fund local cancer care and two other local cancer-related charities, Live by Living and Camp Kesem at CU Boulder. With three fully-supported route choices for cyclists — of 68, 38 and 24 miles — plus an outstanding post-ride party with music, food and craft beer, the event attracted 742 enthusiastic cyclists this past August.
“With this one-day event, we fund the entire year of integrative cancer care at Boulder Community Health,” says executive director Paul Balaguer. “We couldn’t be prouder to support the work at the Center for Integrative Care, nor more humbled by the honor of supporting the dedicated crew there helping cancer patients.”
The team at the Center for Integrative Care provides a full complement of services, addressing each individual’s physical, emotional, social and spiritual needs.
“It’s immensely rewarding to see the impact our work has on people — who are in a place none of us wants to be,” says Paul. His work as director of the organization is both grounding and perspective-building. “When I see the compassion and commitment of the staff there, I fully understand what it really means to support someone in that battle.”
Fortunately for so many, after the diagnosis, and the battle, there’s survivorship. And that’s what Paul and the B Strong Riders celebrate each year as they pedal the beautiful roads and open space in Boulder County. He’s grateful for the participants, community and businesses that back the ride. “Alpine Bank’s generosity and outspoken support of our event and causes within our community are what allow us to do the work we do,” he says.
