Erick G. Perez and Erick D. Perez have been cultivating coffee since they were little, in their native Guatemala, where they were both born and raised on a coffee farm named El Diamante located in Aguadulce, Huehuetenango. They’ve also been baking wholesome old-world style bread from a family recipe that has been passed down through many generations. In addition to this unique background and specific skillset they possess, the father-son duo also love connecting with others and listening and sharing stories with their customers.
“It’s full circle. We’ve done everything from planting the seed to roasting the coffee, and now we get the privilege of brewing and serving it,” said Erick D. “It’s a wonderful story and process that we love sharing. From fruit seeds to your coffee mug, the journey is a fascinating one.”
Although coffee farming and bread baking have been lifelong labors, their restaurant, Café Kapé in Rifle, has been open just a couple of months. “Rifle has had a big push to develop the downtown, and we want to be part of this change,” said Erick. “We know we can relate to 100 percent of our customers no matter who they are or what their story is. Coffee, bread and cakes are a perfect way to connect.”
Erick asserts that although Rifle has a wide variety of social, economic and political circles, his clientele share similar preferences. “We can offer the best tasting coffee, the freshest coffee and the best-priced coffee in Rifle,” said Erick. “All for the purpose of bringing this town together, no matter a person’s socioeconomic background. That shouldn’t matter and it won’t matter when you walk into Café Kapé!”
Erick explains that coffee competition is largely skewed toward large premium brands. “However, modern-day savvy coffee drinkers seek new coffees based on exclusivity, sourcing and flavor profiles,” he said. “A bonus is our wonderful story of where our coffee comes from and how our bread is made. If you ask, we are happy to show you some pictures.”
Since the Perezes came to the United States more than 20 years ago, they’ve banked with Alpine Bank. “Alpine Bank has welcomed us with wide-open arms,” said Erick. “We trust them and we like the fact that they’re a local bank.”
