Celebrate the green way

The holidays are a time for lighthearted fun. With the exception of decorating with festive green pine trees and boughs, though, you may not think of celebrating in ways that are green for the sake of the environment. The good news is that you can enjoy eco-friendly holidays — without sacrificing the spirit of the season — by incorporating these green practices:

  • Serve more meatless dishes – Meat production accounts for as much as 60 percent of greenhouse gasses from food production. In light of this fact, try to minimize meat consumption at your celebratory get-togethers.
  • Shop local – Less transport distance for products, supplies and gifts means less environmental impact.
  • Make the most of leftovers – Discarding extra food purchased and prepared for celebrations wastes resources and energy. Instead, incorporate your leftovers into future meals.
  • Use reusable tableware – While convenient, disposable tableware utilizes precious resources, and when discarded it ends up in the landfill. Break out the good china!

We hope these tips will help you green your holidays in a meaningful way. To learn about Alpine Bank’s commitment to sustainability, read about our Green Initiative here.
